Rayonier's Fernandina pulp mill
1939
Fernandina Beach, Florida
The company started in 1926 as Rainier Pulp and Paper in Shelton, Washington, cooking western hemlock into bleached pulp, and became Rayonier in 1937 by welding rayon onto Rainier. It bought southern timber the following year and built this mill, which went into production in 1939. It still runs on the Amelia River a few blocks from the Victorian downtown, and the rail spur into it is still tagged with the company name.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
