William Chapman Ralston, founder of the Bank of California and a financier of the Comstock silver, took over an Italianate villa built for Count Leonetto Cipriani and enlarged it into an 80 room house with mirrored ballrooms and steamboat detailing, calling the estate Belmont. The town took the name. In August 1875 the bank collapsed, the directors forced him out, and he drowned in the bay off North Beach the next day. The house is a National Historic Landmark and sits inside a college campus.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
