Checkerboard Square
1894
Checkerboard Square, St. Louis, Missouri
William Danforth built a feed company and took his trademark from a family he had seen where the mother dressed every child in the same red and white checked cloth so she could find them in a crowd. He put the checkerboard on the sacks, then on the buildings, then renamed the street. The company sold pet food to most of the country from a square named after a pattern from a gingham dress.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
