Ralph Peer set up portable recording gear over a hat warehouse on State Street, took an advertisement in the local paper offering fifty dollars a side, and waited. Over twelve days he recorded seventy-six sides by nineteen acts, among them the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers on consecutive days. Country music as a commercial form starts here, and the state line runs down the middle of the street outside.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
