Portolá walks past Monterey Bay
1769
Point Pinos, Pacific Grove, California
Sent up the coast to find the harbour Vizcaíno had described as sheltered and magnificent, Portolá's party reached it, looked at a wide shallow bight in bad weather, decided this could not possibly be the place, and kept walking north. They found San Francisco Bay instead, which nobody had asked for. They came back the next year and admitted it had been Monterey all along.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
