A mastodon comes out of Baisley Pond
1858
South Jamaica, Queens, New York

In April 1858 about a hundred men were draining this old mill pond to convert it into a reservoir for the City of Brooklyn when they struck bone in the peat. What came up included five molars and a bone fragment from an American mastodon, the first recorded mastodon found within what is now New York City. The pond stopped supplying water long ago and sits at the centre of a 109 acre park. A mastodon sculpture in the playground marks the spot.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
