Port Johnston, the largest coal dock in the world
1866
Kill van Kull at Constable Hook, Bayonne, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Central Railroad of New Jersey finished a 2,750 foot coal wharf here in 1866, the largest in the world at the time. Around 200 men, most of them Irish immigrants, emptied Pennsylvania anthracite out of rail cars into barges bound across the bay for New York. Bayonne's first full scale strike started on this dock in July 1877.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
