Poletown is condemned for a car plant, and the ruling stands for 23 years
1981
Detroit, Michigan
To assemble a site for General Motors, Detroit and Hamtramck used eminent domain to clear about 4,200 residents, 1,300 homes, 140 businesses, six churches and a hospital. Parishioners held a sit-in at Immaculate Conception for 29 days before police carried them out in July 1981. The Michigan Supreme Court held that private economic development counted as a public use, a decision copied across the country until the same court reversed itself in 2004.
