Plymouth Church, where Henry Ward Beecher auctioned freedom

Henry Ward Beecher preached here from the church's opening until 1887 and turned the pulpit into a national abolitionist platform. He staged mock auctions during Sunday services, playing the fast talking auctioneer while the congregation raised money to buy enslaved people out of bondage. The best known was a girl called Pinky, auctioned in the sanctuary in February 1860. The undercroft is believed to have sheltered people escaping north.
