George Corson built the hall in 1856 above his carriage shed, with room for about two hundred people, on a farm that had already served for decades as an Underground Railroad station. Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe both spoke in it. The painter Thomas Hovenden married into the family and turned the hall into his studio, and after a long fight with a developer, Whitemarsh Township and the Whitemarsh Art Center bought the property in 2022.
