Pittsburgh is founded beside the Pegram rail shops
1883
Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Georgia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Black railroad workers settled this ground in 1883 next to the Pegram shops, where locomotives were repaired. Someone thought the smoke and soot looked like the steel city in Pennsylvania, and the name stuck. It remained a Black working class neighbourhood through the twentieth century and now sits in the path of the BeltLine's property boom.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
