Aurora opened a small zoo in Phillips Park in 1915. In 1934 a Civil Works Administration crew excavating the park lake struck American mastodon bones, including three skulls and a six foot tusk, and the water has been called Mastodon Lake ever since. The zoo dropped its giraffes and monkeys once Brookfield opened the same year and switched to native species. There is still no admission charge.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
