Petty Island, from Lenape ground to oil terminal to preserve
1678
Pennsauken, New Jersey

The Lenape knew this 292 acre island opposite Kensington as Shackamaxon and sold it in 1678. A boundary convention in 1783 settled that it belongs to New Jersey rather than Pennsylvania. It spent the twentieth century as a Cities Service and then Citgo petroleum terminal, and the state moved in 2019 to buy it from Citgo and turn it into a nature preserve.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
