Peter van de Kamp finds a planet at Sproul Observatory that was not there

Van de Kamp photographed Barnard's Star from this Swarthmore observatory from 1938 onward and announced in 1963 that a wobble in its motion revealed a Jupiter sized planet. Astronomers accepted the finding for about a decade. Later work traced the wobble to adjustments made to the observatory's own 24 inch telescope rather than to the star. Van de Kamp never conceded the point. The telescope left for Arkansas in 2017.
