Dearborn Observatory and the biggest telescope in America
1888
Northwestern University, Evanston
The 18 and a half inch Dearborn refractor was the largest telescope in the United States in the late 1860s. Northwestern and the Chicago Astronomical Society built this observatory to hold it in 1888, and the whole building was picked up and moved in the summer of 1939 to clear ground for the Technological Institute. It is the second Dearborn Observatory, after one at the old University of Chicago.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
