Pawleys Island, arrogantly shabby

Pawleys Island, South Carolina

Rice planters moved their families to this barrier island every summer to escape malaria in the fields, and the grey cypress cottages they built are still there, deliberately unimproved, the island's own slogan is arrogantly shabby. The rope hammock was invented here in 1889 by a riverboat captain who found grass ones too hot.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
