Georgetown and the rice that Africans knew

This district grew nearly half the rice in the United States, on tidal fields that required banks, floodgates and a knowledge of irrigated rice that planters did not have and West Africans did. Enslaved workers from the rice coast were bought deliberately for it. The task system used here, a set amount of work, then your own time, is why Gullah culture and language survived more intact than almost anywhere.
