Paerdegat Basin, the sewer overflow that fouled Jamaica Bay for a century
2011
Canarsie, Brooklyn, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The name is the old Dutch for horse gate. Every time rain filled Brooklyn's combined sewers the excess went down this mile and a quarter channel into Jamaica Bay, close to two billion gallons in a year. A retention tank holding fifty million gallons was switched on in May 2011, cutting the discharge by roughly seventy percent, and the ground above it was planted as wetland.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
