Lewis Judson and Levi Arnold platted this crossing on the Fox River in 1835, first under the name Hudson. County voters moved the Kendall County seat here from Yorkville in 1845, and the town grew quickly on the strength of being both a courthouse town and a stagecoach junction. Farmers in the southern townships got tired of the drive and voted the seat back to Yorkville in 1859. The Civil War held up the move until 1864, and Oswego's growth slowed for a century afterward.
