A Methodist camp-meeting association bought a mile of shorefront and ran it as a religious town, a tent city that never came down, six hundred canvas-and-wood cottages still pitched each summer around a vast wooden auditorium. For a century the gates were chained on Sundays and no car could move. It is the largest tent community in the country and it is still, quietly, a church.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
