Oak Park Village Hall, built on the east side to stop white flight
1975
Oak Park, Illinois
When Black families began moving into east Oak Park in the late 1960s, white owners started pulling money out of the neighbourhood and leaving. The village bet the other way. It poured public investment into the east side, passed rules against blockbusting and resegregation, and in 1975 put its new seat of government at 123 Madison Street, in the middle of the east side itself, as a landmark meant to anchor it. The plan worked: Oak Park came out of it diverse and integrated.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
