NUMMI: the plant that taught Detroit
1984
Fremont, California

General Motors had closed this plant for absenteeism, sabotage and drinking on the line. Toyota reopened it with GM as a partner, rehired most of the same workers, and gave any of them the power to stop the line by pulling a cord. Quality went from the worst in GM to the best. Detroit sent people to study it for years and struggled to copy it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
