Northbrae, the Berkeley suburb with pink sidewalks and globe-topped street pillars
1907
Northbrae, North Berkeley, California
Northbrae was laid out in the early 1900s as Berkeley pushed north over rough volcanic ground. The developers gave it pink sidewalks and stone pillars topped with concrete globes that carry the street names, and many of those still stand. The hills are threaded with stairways cut into the rock, and the neighbourhood's centre is the fountain at the Circle.
