Nickels Arcade, the last freestanding arcade building in Michigan
1918
Nickels Arcade, 326-330 South State Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Work started on this glass roofed shopping passage off State Street in 1915 and the war held it up until 1918. The form was popularised by the Cleveland Arcade and once turned up in commercial districts across the Midwest. This is thought to be the only freestanding example left in Michigan, and it was listed on the national register in 1987.
