Lead above the federal limit turned up in Newark school buildings in March 2016 and in the wider water system in the years after, and comparisons to Flint followed. In March 2019 the city announced it would pull out all 18,000 lead service lines, and by August 2021 officials said nearly all had been replaced with copper. In October 2024 prosecutors said a contractor had falsified the work at 1,500 properties and taken more than $10 million for it.
