New Hope Baptist Church, where Whitney Houston learned to sing
Newark, New Jersey

Newark's growing Black community organised New Hope in 1903 and bought the Sussex Avenue building ten years later. Cissy Houston joined in 1954 and ran the choir for more than fifty years, which is where her daughter Whitney and her nieces Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick learned to sing in front of a room. Whitney's funeral was held here in 2012, and the city later renamed the corner outside for her mother.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
