Gutzon Borglum blasted away 450,000 tons of granite over fourteen years, on a mountain the Lakota call the Six Grandfathers, in hills guaranteed to them by treaty and taken after gold was found. It was conceived by a state historian purely to bring tourists to South Dakota, and it worked.
