Gutzon Borglum, who later carved Mount Rushmore, put Lincoln on a bronze bench with his hat set down beside him, an idea he took from accounts of Lincoln sitting alone in the White House garden after bad news. Theodore Roosevelt dedicated it on Memorial Day 1911 and said it did not look like a monument at all, which Borglum took as a compliment. A Newark furniture merchant, Amos Van Horn, left $25,000 to pay for it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
