Long Island College Hospital closes after a two year fight
1858
Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, New York
Long Island College Hospital opened in 1858 and spent a century and a half as the teaching hospital for this corner of Brooklyn. SUNY Downstate, which ran it, said the 506 bed hospital was losing $13 million a month and moved to shut it in 2013. The fight ran two years and produced repeated arrests at rallies, including that of Bill de Blasio, then the city's public advocate and running for mayor, who was charged with disorderly conduct. The hospital closed in August 2014 and the site was sold to a residential developer.
