Kerr-McGee drilled a producing well in the Gulf about ten miles out, beyond sight of the shore, using a surplus navy barge for quarters. It worked, and the entire offshore industry followed from it. The town still holds a Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, which is an honest summary of what the coast has lived on since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
