Mooseheart, the child city the Loyal Order of Moose built
1913
Mooseheart, Illinois
The Moose fraternal order dedicated a thousand acre campus here in 1913 as a home and school for the widows and children of its members, and ran it as a working town rather than an orphanage, with its own buildings, farm and government. Eleven children arrived that first summer and more than eleven thousand have lived there since. Like the lodges that paid for it, it took only white families at the start.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
