Mobile holds Mardi Gras before New Orleans
1703
Government Street, Mobile, Alabama
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The French celebrated here fifteen years before New Orleans existed, and the modern parading krewe was invented in Mobile in 1830 when a cotton clerk called Michael Krafft led a drunken procession with rakes and cowbells borrowed from a hardware store. New Orleans took the form and made it famous. Mobile has been pointing out who had it first ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
