Mitchel Field, the Army's airfield on the Hempstead Plains
1918
East Garden City, Uniondale, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
It opened in 1918 as Hazelhurst Aviation Field No. 2 and was renamed the same year for John Purroy Mitchel, the former mayor of New York, who had just been killed in a training crash in Louisiana. In the Second World War it was the main air defence station for New York City, flying two squadrons of P-40s. The Air Force gave it up in 1961, and the runways now carry Nassau Community College, Hofstra's north campus, the Coliseum and the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The surviving buildings were made a historic district in 2018.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
