Miller Field, the Army's airfield on the Vanderbilt farm
1919
New Dorp, Staten Island, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Army bought Vanderbilt pasture at New Dorp in 1919, cleared the fences and cut a single sod runway diagonally across it. The field was part of the harbour defences and doubled as a test strip for seaplanes, including aircraft prepared for the first Pan American flights and for Richard Byrd's Antarctic expedition. It stopped flying long ago and is now parkland inside Gateway National Recreation Area.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
