Mission Santa Cruz and the murdered padre
1791
Santa Cruz, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The twelfth mission, planted on a river the Spanish thought promising and then undercut when a secular town was founded directly across it. In 1812 its priest, Andrés Quintana, was killed by men of his own congregation after years of floggings, the only such killing in the chain. The original church fell in an earthquake. What stands is a half-size replica built in 1931.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
