Carmel Mission and Serra's grave

Carmel, California

Junípero Serra ran the whole California chain from here and is buried under the sanctuary floor. The mission's own registers record the arithmetic of that system plainly: baptisms of Rumsen and Esselen people, and then the burials, which outran them. The stone church with its leaning tower and star window is the one he was still building when he died.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
