Mills-Peninsula, a hospital set on bearings so it can outlive the fault

The San Andreas runs less than two miles uphill from this hospital, which is the problem the building was designed around. It opened in May 2011 on friction pendulum bearings that let the whole structure slide roughly thirty inches sideways while the ground moves underneath it, the first hospital in Northern California built that way. The target was not merely that the walls stay up but that the emergency room keep working through a magnitude 8.5 quake centred on Burlingame. Its predecessor on the site was a district hospital that opened in 1954 and merged with San Mateo's Mills Memorial in 1985.
