Mill Grove, John James Audubon's first American home
1803
Mill Grove, Audubon, Pennsylvania
The house was built in the 1760s above the Perkiomen, and in 1803 an eighteen year old John James Audubon was sent over from France to look after the estate and the lead mine on it. He stayed until 1808, and the woods and fields here are where he started drawing birds in earnest. The 130 acre property is now a museum and wildlife sanctuary run by Montgomery County, and it was made a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
