Michigan Stadium and the footings Yost left for a bigger crowd

Fielding Yost convinced the regents in 1926 that Ferry Field would never be big enough, and the stadium opened the next year at a cost of $950,000 with 72,000 seats. Yost wanted 150,000 and could not get the money, so the builders sank footings deep enough to carry that many and left them for a later generation. Official capacity now reads 107,601, the largest stadium in the country, and crowds above 115,000 have been recorded inside it.
