Mercer Island made the state roof over Interstate 90 and put a park on top
1976
Mercer Island, Washington
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Mercer Island fought the widening of Interstate 90 straight through the middle of the island and won a memorandum of agreement signed in December 1976 by the state highway commission, Seattle, Bellevue, King County and Metro. Aubrey Davis negotiated it for the island and forced a redesign. The result was 2,800 feet of freeway covered by a lid carrying parks and footpaths, opened in the 1990s. It was renamed for Davis after his death in 2013.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
