Memorial Chapel, the University of Maryland's monument to its war dead
1952
College Park, Maryland
Four students handed the Board of Regents 1,348 signatures in 1946 asking for a chapel on the College Park campus. By 1948 the Regents had decided it would be dedicated to the university's dead from the two world wars, and the architect Henry Powell Hopkins designed a building holding three separate chapels under one roof. It opened on 12 October 1952 in front of a crowd of more than 1,300. Its steeple is still the highest point on campus, and a Vietnam veterans memorial was added to the grounds in 1988.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
