Charles R. Drew University, the only Black medical school west of the Mississippi
1966
Willowbrook, California
Founded in 1966 in answer to how little medical care the Watts area could actually reach, the university takes its name from Charles Drew, whose work on blood transfusion and blood banking during the Second World War underpins modern transfusion medicine. It is a federally designated Historically Black Graduate Institution, one of four historically Black medical colleges in the country and the only one west of the Mississippi. Its medical degree runs jointly with UCLA.
