A. L. Lewis's granddaughter trained at the Oberlin Conservatory and sang opera in Europe for a decade after her 1959 debut in Braunschweig. She came home, gave away her entire fortune to environmental causes, and from 1975 spent the rest of her life fighting development at American Beach and explaining the place to anyone who stopped. She died in 2005, and that November the Dalai Lama named her an Unsung Hero of Compassion. The museum on Julia Street keeps the beach's record.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
