Harry T. Burleigh, who taught Dvorak the spirituals
1866

Born in Erie in 1866 and taught the spirituals by his grandfather Hamilton Waters, who had been born into slavery and bought his own freedom. Burleigh got into the National Conservatory in New York and sang them for Antonin Dvorak, who was running the place and looking for what American music should be built on. The New World Symphony came out of that conversation. Burleigh then spent a career arranging spirituals as concert songs, which is most of the reason they are sung in recital halls at all.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
