Marina del Rey dredges the largest man made small craft harbor in North America

Los Angeles County had eyed the Ballona marsh as a harbor site since the nineteenth century and finally funded one in 1953. Breakwater work started in October 1963 and the harbor was dedicated on 10 April 1965 at a cost of about 36 million dollars, with slips for roughly 5,000 boats. Building it destroyed more than 900 acres of wetland, and 3.5 million cubic yards of dredged fill were dumped on what was left, raising some of the remaining marsh by fifteen feet.
