MacDowell, the first artists' colony
1907
Peterborough, New Hampshire
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The composer Edward MacDowell's farm became, in 1907, the first artists' residency in the country: cabins in the woods, lunch left in a basket on the porch so nobody has to speak before dark. Copland wrote here, Baldwin wrote here, and Thornton Wilder wrote Our Town here, about a New Hampshire town that is transparently this one.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
