M.R. Wood School wins eight straight district football titles behind the sugar refinery
1965
Sugar Land, Texas
M.R. Wood opened in the 1940s next to the Imperial Sugar plant as the Sugar Land school for Black children, first grade through twelfth. Across the 1950s and 1960s its football team won eight district championships in a row. The high school grades ended when Fort Bend ISD desegregated in September 1965, and the building later became the district's alternative education centre.
