Locke High School is handed to a charter operator

Locke opened in 1967, named for the Harlem Renaissance philosopher Alain LeRoy Locke, and built because the McCone Commission had blamed the 1965 uprising partly on the schools around Watts. Four decades later it was sending about one in twenty entering ninth graders on to a four year college. In 2008 Los Angeles Unified turned the whole campus over to Green Dot Public Schools, the first time the country's second largest district gave an entire neighbourhood high school to an outside operator.
