Lincoln at Farmington
1841
Louisville, Kentucky
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A hemp plantation worked by enslaved people, and the home of Joshua Speed, the closest friend Abraham Lincoln ever had. Lincoln spent three weeks here in the summer of 1841, low and unwell, having just broken off his engagement, and the letters the two men wrote afterward, about marriage and doubt, are among the most searching Lincoln left. What he saw of slavery on this farm he cited, twenty years on, as something he could not forget.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
