A potato field turned into seventeen thousand near-identical houses, put up on an assembly line of crews that each did one task down the street, and sold to returning veterans with almost nothing down. It built the American suburb and the American commute. The standard lease forbade sale to anyone not white, in print, and the town stayed almost entirely so for decades.
